Do you know what music publishing is?  As a song writer or musician, you should.  Why?  To put it simply, because your portion of the profits stemming from your songs depends heavily upon music publishing and your knowledge of the copyright laws which affect it.

The law defines music publishing as a contractual relationship between the songwriter or music composer and a music publisher, on which the writer assigns  various music copyrights to the publisher in exchange for the publisher’s commercial exploitation of the music.  Basically, this definition is a lot of big words that mean you, as the creator of a lyric or music of a song, can sell your song and make money from the sale using a music publisher.

In most cases, music publishers will make an agreement with song writers to purchase the various copyrights  to their songs in exchange for promoting the song to the recording industry, as well as video and television entertainment venues.  They may offer a small up front advance on royalty earnings to the writer.  Most generally, the music publisher will enter this arrangement with the contracted terms that they will be entitled to a 50/50 share of any future royalties earned from the song they are promoting.  The music publisher is then responsible for promoting the song, keeping track of where the song is used and collecting the royalty payments for its use.  Once any advance money paid to the writer has been recouped, the publishing company is also responsible for disbursing the writers portion of the royalty payments to them.

On the internet there are many supposed “solutions” to creating professional tracks. Some of them actually have good content, and can play a role in your projects. But even the best of them seem to assume a lot. You have to “get” why things sound the way they do, and why there are do’s and don’ts that you should follow. The assumption seems to be that, since this is so much fun, and the technology does so much for you, there aren’t any real rules, and you don’t need to know much. Everything will just come out great. Some of these solutions depend on an arsenal of equipment that you probably don’t own, or you are held captive by their proprietary solution (i.e. their own product). Soon, everything starts to sound alike, and this is not really desirable if you want to be good at this.

So, after finding that the choices seem to be: 1. Go to music school, spend a lot of money, study hard, take in all you can, and then maybe you’ll know what you’re doing. or 2. Buy the right toys and the music will take care of itself. It’s all about learning the technology. Well, I’m here to tell you that, if you even remotely believe #2, you need to adjust your perspective some. However, going to music school is something that most people can not afford, neither time wise nor financially. So what’s the truth, and where can you find it?

1. A Book of Music Is Not Technically Sheet Music

The American Heritage Dictionary defines Sheet Music as “Compositions printed on unbound sheets of paper”. So books of music script would not (technically) be classed as sheet music.

2. “Sheet Music” Was The Title of an Album by 10CC

This was the second album written by 10CC which reached number nine in the UK album charts, and number eighty one in the USA. The 1974 release by the Manchester (England) band included the singles “The Wall Street Shuffle” and “Silly Love”.

3. Sheet Music or Score?

These two terms actually mean the same thing, as score is the more generic description of Sheet Music. There are several types of score including “full score”, “miniature score”, “piano score” etc. Score can also be used to refer to incidental music written for a play, TV or film.

4. The First Printed Sheet Music Book Appeared in 1457

The “Mainz Psalter” was the first book printed to include music notation. It was printed in Mainz, Germany but still had to have the notation filled in by hand!

5. The First Machine Printed Music Appeared in the 1473

The first sheet music publications printed on machines didn’t appear unitl 1473, almost 20 years after Gutenburg had invented the printing press. Before this most sheet music was written by hand! This was essentially when the Music industry as we know it began.
