We are all driven by a passion for some aspect
of our lives; it is why we exist. However each and every one
of us has a hidden corner of the mind in which we live out
our private fantasies. Sometimes we are lucky enough to allow
these fantasies to become reality and that is the essence
of this C.D.
Whilst my passion is to conduct opera and
to truly interpret Mozart’s sublime clarinet concerto,
my hidden love is the saxophone with its secret, tender voice
that it seldom gets to reveal.
This golden gem is famous as a jazz instrument
screeching away in the bar room. And yet its tenderness can
come to light such as in Michael Easton’s Meeting in
the Mist.
Although most at home in languid, sensuous
melodies, when required the saxophone can display brilliance
best witnessed on this recording in Iturralde´s Czardas.
In Ravel’s Habanera a smoke filled bar in some distant
spot in Latin America must be the inspiration for this tantalizing
slow and ultimately sensual duo between both partners.
Few people surpassed Rachmaninoff in his ability
to write sweeping melodies that go like a dart straight to
the heart. The Vocalise could almost be Cupid’s theme
song.
And the tender whispers of two lovers are eloquently expressed
in Karen Tanaka’s Night Bird.
My love for the saxophone is such that I want
to take it out of the bar room and into the bedroom.
I trust you will enjoy joining me in this
endeavor!
